Cure All - Mennonite Herritale Village Cookbook by Sue Barkman

Specialization is for Insects

A human being should be able to change a diaper, plan an invasion, butcher a hog, conn a ship, design a building, write a sonnet, balance accounts, build a wall, set a bone, comfort the dying, take orders, give orders, cooperate, act alone, solve equations, analyze a new problem, pitch manure, program a computer, cook a tasty meal, fight efficiently, die gallantly. Specialization is for insects.
Robert Heinlein’s, Time Enough for Love.
I came across this quote in a book I am reading called Making Home, by Sharon Astyk.  I don't love Heinlein's personality or politics, well, maybe I like the libertarian in him, but it ends there, but I do love this quote.  Truly, we are not insects.    We're not even distant descendants or 153th cousins of them in the elaborate Tree of Life.   We're distinct in the grid of creation, made in the image of God and capable of this exhaustive list of "shoulds".

Gabe has a recital coming up, Algebra to finish and some reading to wrap up before we end for the season... and lots of snow-plowing to do on the ATV.  Not a bad life.

Proverbs 4

A celebration of 13, the Bar Mitzvah year

"Listen, my sons, to a father’s instruction;
pay attention and gain understanding.
I give you sound learning,
so do not forsake my teaching.
For I too was a son to my father,
still tender, and cherished by my mother.
Then he taught me, and he said to me,
“Take hold of my words with all your heart;
keep my commands, and you will live.
Get wisdom, get understanding;
do not forget my words or turn away from them.
Do not forsake wisdom, and she will protect you;
love her, and she will watch over you."

Kingston - day tripping and the Wolfe Island ferry

Jason has had a heavy travel schedule this season.  He had a two day stop over in Kingston so we decided to crash his party and hang out in Kingston with him.

Practicing our chop stick skills at Ta Ke Sushi Restaurant. Yum.

It so happened that, because the Lord goes before His sheep - a very kind friend, Captain Arthur Emtage, was the first Mate on the Wolfe Island Ferry which meant we go to see the captain deck of the ferry and hang out with him for a bit.  Cole wants to be a ship's captain now.
